Cataract is an ageing process and is a gradual clouding of the natural lens in the human eye resulting in glare, foggy vision and reduced vision. Glaucoma, mistakenly known as ‘tension les yeux’ locally can lead to blindness unless detected early and treatment started. This disease gradually robs one’s peripheral vision in the early stages of the disease. The most common retinal disease responsible for blindness in Mauritius is diabetic retinopathy. All diabetics are advised to have an eye examination including a retinal check on a regular basis.
